Logo vs Branding: What’s the Difference?

One of the most asked questions Modernist Design gets asked by a new start up business is "can you design us a logo?" Although the answer is yes it's always worth considering how you may use the logo in the future. So whether you’re starting a business or refreshing your look, it is definitely worth understanding the difference so Modernist Graphic Design can help you build a stronger, more cohesive identity.

So, what is a logo?
A logo is a visual mark or symbol that represents your business. It might include your business name, a symbol, or both. Think of it as your signature—it helps people recognise you at a glance. A well-designed logo is simple, memorable, and works across a range of uses—from business cards to billboards.

And branding?
Branding is the bigger picture. It’s the full experience someone has with your business. This includes your logo, but also your colours, fonts, tone of voice, photography, packaging, website design, and even how you talk to customers. Branding is about how your business looks and feels.
Here’s a quick way to think about it:
  • Your logo is your face.
  • Your brand is your personality, style, and voice.

You need both to make a lasting impression. A strong logo helps people recognise you. A strong brand helps people remember you—and trust you.
